The myMAP subjects below link to VCE subjects related to the learning domain of Visual Arts. Students choose the options that are best for them. There are no pre-requisites for entry into their chosen senior pathway, but students are strongly encouraged to select subjects that align with those that they wish to take in VCE. Students are encouraged to select subjects in order of difficulty across the myMAP years (from sandstone, white, yellow, light blue to dark blue) in order to build relevant skills. For example, a student may select one or more of the options that are on the ‘road’ to VCE Media, including a white course, two yellow courses, a light blue course and a dark blue course. In this instance, it is recommended that the electives are studied in the order they are listed on the ‘road to Media’ (although a student may choose to do two of these electives at the same time).

Media is deeply embedded within life and culture. It entertains, teaches, informs, and shapes our perception of our lives and the world in which we live. The relationship between media and audience is complex, especially in light of rapidly changing technology. In this study, students explore the construction and storytelling techniques of various media forms, including film, television, and photography. They analyse the creative choices involved in these productions, such as the use of lighting and sound to convey meaning in a film. Additionally, students examine the concepts of influence, power, audience, agency, and the role media plays in shaping views and values. Students harness this theoretical knowledge to produce their own media products, such as short films and photographic series. They develop their technical skills by operating media equipment and software. In this way, they gain a critical understanding of media and their role as both producers and consumers of media products.

Industry and Design prepares students for VCE Visual Communication Design by immersing them in industry-standard practices across the four design fields: Messages, Objects, Environments, and Interactive Experiences. Students respond to a series of design briefs that reflect real-world contexts, exploring how professional designers develop concepts, meet client needs, and communicate ideas effectively. They analyse the work of past and present designers, examining how materials, methods, media, and technologies are used to solve design problems. Through the creation of mini folios, students apply the design process to produce resolved visual communications, demonstrating their understanding of design elements, principles, and production techniques.

Visual Communication Design challenges students to refine their personal design style while deepening their understanding of visual communication. Students explore the design process through practical projects across the four key design fields: Messages, Objects, Environments, and Interactive Experiences. They use drawing and digital tools to develop and present ideas, applying design elements and principles to communicate effectively. Through critiques and analysis of contemporary and historical designs, students build confidence in articulating design decisions. Projects may include brand identity, product design, spatial planning, and user experience. Students become proficient in the Visual Communication Design process and get comfortable with the tools and techniques employed across various design disciplines.

Design Process equips students with the skills to navigate and apply the complete design process using the Double Diamond model—Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. Working from client briefs, students explore how to interpret constraints and respond to real-world needs through creative and strategic thinking. They investigate and experiment with a range of media, materials, and methods to generate and refine ideas. Students produce a folio that documents their design journey, from research and generation of ideas to final presentation.

Students explore how media creators tell a story through the mediums of photography and film. They will analyse the use of codes and conventions, and how they incite emotions from specific audiences. Students also study genres by investigating how films are constructed to conform to a particular genre. The knowledge gained from these investigations is used to generate the students’ own stories, by creating a short film or photographic series. Students refine their understanding of media processes and technologies, and enhance their understanding of Adobe Suite programs.

In this subject, students study and create media. They will learn how to operate a DSLR camera, including how to manipulate manual functions such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Students then use their knowledge to plan, create and refine a photographic series that explores a theme. The second part of this subject involves analysing film, then creating it. Students will also improve their editing skills using Adobe programs.

In Exploring Media students investigate the use of media techniques across several media forms. Students explore the print media forms of film posters, newspapers and magazines, and how these are used to engage audiences and tell stories. These skills are then used to create media in these forms. Student explore how genres are established, and complete an investigation into Film Noir. They use their knowledge of genre theory to plan, produce and edit a film sequence with the help of their peers. This subject provides students with an introduction to key media technologies and software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere Pro.
